Image extensions are a search ad extension that allows you to upload rich, relevant images to complement your existing text ads, serving as a one by one image on the bottom right portion of the ad. With compelling visuals of products or services that enhance the message of your text ad, image extensions can help drive performance for your ads.
Early results show advertisers are seeing up to a 10% increase in click through rate, when image extensions or dynamic image extensions show with their mobile search ads in absolute top positioning.
To set up image extensions, once you’re logged into your Google Ads account, click on “Ads & extensions” on the left hand side, then click on “Extensions”.
When the extensions menu loads up, click on the plus button to create a new extension. Select “Image extension”. This opens the image creation flow. Select which level to add your image extension to “Campaign” or “Ad group”. Then select the campaign or ad group to apply the extension. You’ll be prompted to create new or use an existing image extension if you have created one in the past.
Now you are ready to use the media picker tool to select your images! If the dimensions do not meet the specifications, you’ll need to crop the image using our cropping tool. For best results, select both aspect ratios. Once you hit “Save”, you are all set!
Your image extension has been applied to your campaigns or ad groups, and are ready to start serving. Google will serve the image that performs best with each search query.
In addition to creating image extensions manually, you can also opt-in to dynamic image extensions. Dynamic image extensions are an automated extension that allows Google to curate relevant visuals from your ad’s landing page. You can opt-in to dynamic image extensions at the account level. To opt-in to dynamic image extensions, click on “Ads & extensions” on the left hand side, then, click on “Extensions”. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on “Automated extensions”. At the top right of the menu options, click “More” and “Advanced settings”. Select the drop-down for “Dynamic image extension” and select “On”. Once you hit “Save”, your dynamic image extension is ready to start serving.
